I MADE IT home to Thibodaux around two thirty, and Francine’s old Chrysler Le Baron was in the drive. That meant she was over with her three kids. I couldn’t fault Preston for inviting his cousin and nieces and nephews over on a Sunday, though I’d been hoping for some peace and quiet. After the past forty-eight hours, my nerves were frayed.

I surprised the lot of them when I came through the front door with my luggage. Francine’s kids, Gracie and Stella, attacked me first. Then Chase shuffled up to me, and I raised him in my arms, spun him around, and gave him a big kiss on the cheek. After the disaster that day with my daddy, it sure was nice to be around people who were happy to see me. It smelled like they had a pork roast in the oven. The living room was a disaster area with all the kids’ toys strewn around. Francine’s eldest, Louie, came over to say hi, and then Francine and Preston stepped over.

“Congratulations, Arizona. Press tol’ me ‘bout your book,” Francine said.

I gave her a little hug while I had Chase propped up at my side.

“Duke been by with your car, but we didn’t know when you was coming home,” Preston said.

He didn’t sound angry about it. I saw a congratulations banner and a two-layer cake with icing on the kitchen’s island counter. I felt bad I hadn’t let them surprise me, but I was also relieved I’d made it home.

“I don’t have any excuse except to say I could’ve slept till Monday.” I gave Francine a wink.

Preston quirked an eyebrow. “That must’ve been some night. We tried to get the 4-1-1 from Duke, but he wouldn’t say.”

I gave Chase another kiss and sent him off to play with his cousins. “Food smells great. I oughta get cleaned up. You all had dinner already?”

“We was just getting ready. But we can wait.”

I gave him a nod, took my big suitcase and carry-on, and hauled them upstairs to the bedroom.

I’d taken a shower at my daddy’s, but I still felt like I needed to scrub away any traces of my past two nights of debauchery while I was around the kids. I threw my suitcase on the bed, and I just pulled off my shirt to head to the bath when Preston came into the room. He was holding something behind his back and had a mischievous look on his face. He stepped over and held out a gift-wrapped box.

“What’s this?” I asked him.

“To congratulate you on your book.”

The rectangular box was kind of heavy. I ripped it open. Inside, there was one of them beaded seat covers. I’d been curious to try one out, though I don’t think I’d ever mentioned it to Press.

“It supposed to help when you sitting for a long time. You can put it on your chair at your desk when you writing or put it on your car seat.”

I set it down on the bed. “Thank you.
