I MADE IT home to Thibodaux around two thirty, and Francineâs old Chrysler Le Baron was in the drive. That meant she was over with her three kids. I couldnât fault Preston for inviting his cousin and nieces and nephews over on a Sunday, though Iâd been hoping for some peace and quiet. After the past forty-eight hours, my nerves were frayed.
I surprised the lot of them when I came through the front door with my luggage. Francineâs kids, Gracie and Stella, attacked me first. Then Chase shuffled up to me, and I raised him in my arms, spun him around, and gave him a big kiss on the cheek. After the disaster that day with my daddy, it sure was nice to be around people who were happy to see me. It smelled like they had a pork roast in the oven. The living room was a disaster area with all the kidsâ toys strewn around. Francineâs eldest, Louie, came over to say hi, and then Francine and Preston stepped over.
âCongratulations, Arizona. Press tolâ me âbout your book,â Francine said.
I gave her a little hug while I had Chase propped up at my side.
âDuke been by with your car, but we didnât know when you was coming home,â Preston said.
He didnât sound angry about it. I saw a congratulations banner and a two-layer cake with icing on the kitchenâs island counter. I felt bad I hadnât let them surprise me, but I was also relieved Iâd made it home.
âI donât have any excuse except to say I couldâve slept till Monday.â I gave Francine a wink.
Preston quirked an eyebrow. âThat mustâve been some night. We tried to get the 4-1-1 from Duke, but he wouldnât say.â
I gave Chase another kiss and sent him off to play with his cousins. âFood smells great. I oughta get cleaned up. You all had dinner already?â
âWe was just getting ready. But we can wait.â
I gave him a nod, took my big suitcase and carry-on, and hauled them upstairs to the bedroom.
Iâd taken a shower at my daddyâs, but I still felt like I needed to scrub away any traces of my past two nights of debauchery while I was around the kids. I threw my suitcase on the bed, and I just pulled off my shirt to head to the bath when Preston came into the room. He was holding something behind his back and had a mischievous look on his face. He stepped over and held out a gift-wrapped box.
âWhatâs this?â I asked him.
âTo congratulate you on your book.â
The rectangular box was kind of heavy. I ripped it open. Inside, there was one of them beaded seat covers. Iâd been curious to try one out, though I donât think Iâd ever mentioned it to Press.
âIt supposed to help when you sitting for a long time. You can put it on your chair at your desk when you writing or put it on your car seat.â
I set it down on the bed. âThank you.
